Once Upon A Time I Dreamt We Were Alive

Description

This photography work represents my recent artistic efforts towards my coursework topic of ‘How has shock art changed the way we think about art and what we constitute to be art?’

In my imagery, I wanted to not only to shock from the observer, due to the bloody and disturbing nature of the photos, but also to create a visual pun. One merely sees a bath full of blood but a ‘blood bath’ is a savage, indiscriminate killing or massacre. I like this humorous aspect of the work as I think it makes the viewer question what they are looking at.

I also wanted to, present something almost ordinary and twist the imagery of it in such a way as to achieve a shocking response from the viewer. The majority of us eat meat and declare it as something ‘natural’ saying that humanity is a part of the food chain, and therefore it is ‘normal’ to kill animals for our own survival. However, in our ever increasing materialistic society, I feel that we do not see meat for what it is. The more our society ‘moves forward’ the more I feel that everything is being presented in a way that it becomes sanitised, something packaged on a shelf. I believe that we no longer see meat in the context of an animal’s death in the way it is presented to us, but instead we see it simply as something to eat on a shelf of a supermarket.

However I do not think that only just through supermarkets and capitalism that we have become disconnected from our environment and nature. On social media sites we are given an opportunity to present ourselves to the world in a way that we see desirable to others. On some sites we are asked to describe ourselves in a limited number of words and provide a photo of ourselves to present who we are. To me through doing this we are no longer presenting ourselves as one human to another as we would in ordinary conversation, but instead as a refined image of ourselves. We only present what we constitute to be the ‘good’ or ‘desirable’ parts of ourselves. We make ourselves products and place ourselves on the metaphorical shelf of the world hoping that someone will come along and decide to purchase what we have to offer.
